Datacenters are large buildings, or multiple large buildings all joined in some way that house up to many hundreds of thousands of
computers all in a very large network. This network is usually used to process large amounts of data for a business or corporate enterprise, or is used to house many, many server machines for people’s web hosting, email services, databases, VoIP, DNS and more. Datacenters usually have two or more super fast internet connections through multiple providers to provide redundancy to the center. They are usually temperature controlled with a mass of air conditioners and air flow construction. They normally also have physical security as the data that is held within those walls is critical, and the machines expensive.
Within those walls, housing rows and rows of servers, switches, routers, UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) and monitoring stations, are server closets. These are usually quite tall, over 6-7 feet high and have a type of shelf that the servers and switches slide into. Common units of measurement for this space is 1RU or 2RU, which means 1 rack unit or 2 rack units. This is because the server closets are also known as a server rack, because they contain a rack of machines.
If you are interested in taking advantage of an affordable placement of your own server in a facility such as this, contact Neuron Computer Services. We have direct access to several of the world’s largest and most powerful datacenters, which is just something that we like to boast about. It’s not easy to keep quiet about having access to premium world class facilities, but we somehow pretend to try.
